Right across the street there's this jacket hanging in a tree. After seeing this for 2 years I decided to document it and confront my neighbours with the documentation. I hoped to find answers to the questions:
Who knows this jacket the way I do? What do other people think when they see it?
How come this jacket hangs there at all and why has it never been removed?
Production/Action
Everyday I took pictures of the jacket from different perspectives. In that period the tree grew leaves and turned green. This still image footage was used for a 50sec video clip.
In the night of 8th of may 2004 I installed a projector to premier the clip to my neighbours. It was set in a car beneath the tree, also the jacket in the tree was illuminated, so it could be seen at night. If somebody walked by the car (and the tree) a light gate was activated and the film was projected to the wall of the building.
Reaction
Highlight of the reactions were my neighbours from the 4th floor, who actually knew the owner of the jacket. Through them I send him the video and he replied to me:
"...all year the jacket gave me some hope and made me laugh, when I saw it. the two years in berlin hadn't been the best in my life, so somehow I felt a little like that jacket: Falling, but just stopped and hanging anywhere, without much happening, independent of the seasons."
