Using grids and patterns is an important exercise in studies of graphic design. Pattern Imitation makes it possible to experience these graphic fundamentals interactively. Starting point is the single unit, which determines the overall visual structure. By actively influencing the single unit the pattern is changed and the user is able to understand the relation between the two.

the following patterns were examined:
Masking the unit's content
A very simple pattern is given, the user only changes the visual content in one unit. Only by changing the masking in a static unit the visual appearance of the pattern is changed.

Tiling and tessellations
An examination of the geometric principles of tessellations. Again the user influences the single unit. The units form is determined by the users actions but also by the rules of a single tile.

Repetition of movement
The unit is defined as movement, not as static graphical form. By repetition and accumulation the pattern becomes visible.

Movement in a recursive system
Again the users movements are used as the unit. The positioning is not determined beforehand but by the movement itself.
